Just a Man
I should be listening
…but I’m not
Give her my best they said
but is my best here inside my head?
If I could just recall
the wit I planned
The way she’d laugh
she just smiled instead
It sounded better in my head
What was it she wants, again?
I’ll give it if I can
But will it be enough
when she finds I’m just a man?
(She wants) A man to make her laugh
A man to make her cry
– but in a good way
What could I possibly say?
Her knight in shining armor
But will this tarnish be OK?
I polished as best I could
but will she notice I’m not all that good?
What was it she wants, again?
I’ll give it if I can
But will it be enough
when she finds I’m just a man?
(She wants) A man who’s down to Earth
but still can fly (but how high?)
To ground a bird would be a crime
and I’m sure there are no angels left
A man who’s a friend
– and a lover
Well how could I be one
and not the other?
…I wonder
What was it she wants, again?
I’ll give it if I can
But will it be enough
when she finds I’m just a man?
But will it be enough?
I’m just a man
